Curriculum
1. Role
Definition: A role is a defined position or function that a person (or subgroup) occupies within the community.
Characteristics:
Often comes with a title (e.g., “Community Chair,” “Event Organizer,” “Outreach Volunteer”).
Sets expectations for how you interact with others and what sphere you focus on.
Can be formal (elected officer, committee chair) or informal (mentor, elder sibling, local connector).
2. Responsibility
Definition: A responsibility is the set of duties or tasks tied to a role—what you are expected to do to help the community thrive.
Characteristics:
More action-oriented (e.g., “schedule monthly meetings,” “manage the community Facebook page,” “greet new members”).
Can be shared among multiple roles or delegated as needed.
Often comes with accountability: people know who to turn to for each task.
| Component | What It Is | Example in a Conservation Group |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Your “hat” in the community | “Field-Site Coordinator” |
| Responsibility | The duties you perform wearing that hat | “Organize quarterly habitat surveys” |
Clarity & Accountability
When everyone knows both who (role) and what (responsibility), tasks don’t slip through the cracks.
Efficiency & Collaboration
Clear roles help avoid duplication of effort; clear responsibilities let volunteers plug in where they’re strongest.
Growth & Succession
Well-defined roles make it easier to onboard new members. Written responsibilities become training checklists.
| Role | Key Responsibilities |
|---|---|
| Leader / Chair | • Set meeting agendas • Facilitate discussions • Make final decisions when necessary |
| Secretary / Recorder | • Take and distribute meeting minutes • Maintain membership lists and documentation |
| Treasurer / Finance Lead | • Track income and expenses • Prepare budget reports • Ensure transparent bookkeeping |
| Event Organizer | • Plan and promote events • Coordinate venues and speakers • Manage registrations |
| Communications Officer | • Update social media and newsletters • Respond to inquiries • Maintain website content |
| Volunteer Coordinator | • Recruit and train volunteers • Assign tasks • Monitor volunteer performance |
| Mentor / Peer Support | • Provide guidance and onboarding • Offer one-on-one support • Help resolve conflicts |
Inventory Needs: List key functions the community must perform (e.g., fundraising, outreach, program delivery).
Match Skills & Interests: Invite members to take on roles that fit their strengths and passions.
Document Clearly: Publish a simple “Roles & Responsibilities” guide—titles, duties, expected time commitment.
Review Regularly: Every 6–12 months, revisit assignments as the community grows or shifts focus.
By clearly distinguishing roles (who does what) and responsibilities (what they do), your community will operate more smoothly, empower its members, and stay resilient as it evolves.
